One day, the count rode into Kummerwald, telling the people that, from now on, they had to work for him, and pay his taxes. One of the people instigated the others to drive the count from their village. Enraged, the count fled, but soon returned with his guard, levelling the village and killing everyone.
Among the few survivors, the instigator swore revenge. He hunted the count, confronted him in the nearby mountains and killed him, repaying the debt of blood he had contracted.

The Count comes to Kummerwald.
The sound of his voice echoes far and wide:
"Hear, you people of Kummerwald;

Hear, you people of Kummerwald;
With sweat and gold I will be paid!"
With full force;
He drives the Count into flight.
Whose roar echoes far and wide:
"Hear, you people of Kummerwald!
Hear, this will be paid in blood!
Hear, you people of Kummerwald!
In your blood this will be paid!"
With sword power;
Green ground painted red.
It runs cold over the back.
"Hear, you people of Kummerwald;
In blood and death I am paid!
Hear, you people of Kummerwald;

Dressed in black;
He hunts the count through the night.
Through the storm his voice echoes far and wide:
"Hear, you people of Kummerwald;
The debt will be paid tonight!
Hear, you people of Kummerwald;
It will be paid in noble blood!"
Down into death;
He pushes the count into a grave of stone.
And his screams echo far and wide:
"Hear, you people of Kummerwald;
Hear, the debt has been paid!
Hear, you people of Kummerwald;
Hear, the debt has been paid!"
